On basis of molecular research (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Belshaw and Quicke 1997</xref>) and morphology (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">van Achterberg 2003</xref>) a subfamily status was proposed for the tribe <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="tribe" reg="Brachistini">Brachistini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. Later, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Sharanowski et al. (2011)</xref> and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Jasso-Martínez et al. (2022)</xref> corroborated the subfamily status of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily" reg="Brachistinae">Brachistinae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> by using more genes and taxa.</p>
<p><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Martin (1956)</xref> and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Mason (1974)</xref> treated <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Aliolus">Aliolus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> as a valid genus because of the carapace-like metasoma and first tergite movable joined to second tergite and the epipleuron of the second and third tergites sharply delimited from the notum. In <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Eubazus">Eubazus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sensu Mason the epipleuron is not sharply delimited from the notum. It is already obvious from the formulation in the key by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Mason (1974)</xref> that the difference is gradual in several species. Therefore, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">van Achterberg (1990)</xref> included <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Aliolus">Aliolus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> as subgenus in the genus <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Eubazus">Eubazus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> “because the degree of separation of the third epipleuron from its notum is highly variable, even within one species” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">van Achterberg 1990</xref>) and the same applies to the second epipleuron. This observation was mostly based on the Palaearctic species and this variation may be less obvious in Nearctic species. Nevertheless, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Papp (1997)</xref> and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sharkey (1997)</xref> considered <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Aliolus">Aliolus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> to be a valid genus, following the classification proposed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Mason (1974)</xref>. Also, the analysis by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Jasso-Martínez et al. (2022)</xref> lend support to the treatment of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Aliolus">Aliolus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> as a genus on its own because <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Aliolus">Aliolus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Eubazus">Eubazus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> do not form a monophyletic clade Unfortunately, the research is based on one species per genus (but two of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Schizoprymnus">Schizoprymnus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) and, therefore, too early to change here the rank of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Aliolus">Aliolus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>.</p>
